This volume only gives a superficial view of the subject and is merely to give a general idea of the nature of the materials that are available for writing a more complete treatise. The author's chief objective has been to collect together a considerable amount of information, otherwise difficult to obtain, and endeavoured to arrive at as reliable conclusions as possible, by examining the greatest number of specimens of each class of remains. Any conclusions drawn are not scientific and can be controverted at any time by a new discovery.
