Three part A4 volume set as noted by George Petrie from the original manuscripts by George Villiers Stanford.The first volume of the collection of ancient music of Ireland was first published by the Society for the Preservation of the Melodies of Ireland in 1855, together with part of the second volume. Petrie died in 1866, and the complete collection was first published by the Irish Literacy Society of London between 1902 and 1905.
Dr Petrie, in his preface, describes the melodies of his country as "the most beautiful national melodies of the world".
